Alles Walzer: My Evening at the Pharmacy Ball

At this year’s Pharmacy Ball, I enjoyed a classic Viennese ball evening with friends from Croatia. The event took place in the Hofburg Palace, the former imperial residence of the Habsburgs and one of Vienna’s most important historic buildings, developed over many centuries and still used for major state functions today.

What I enjoyed most was how each room had its own atmosphere, with different music and dances throughout the night. After the opening, everyone is invited to join the main floor for the Viennese waltz. The waltz originated from earlier folk dances in the 18th century.
It was initially considered controversial because of the close hold between partners and the turning movement, which seemed too bold for polite society. Over time, it became one of the most iconic ballroom dances, closely associated with Vienna.

Later in the evening, the midnight quadrille brought a lighter, more playful moment: a guided group dance where people join in together, even if they are not sure of every step. Overall, it was a charming experience, and I would recommend a Viennese ball to anyone who wants to experience this side of Vienna at least once.
