A Journey to Kenya

After my trip to Zimbabwe in August 2025, I continued to Kenya for a pharmacist conference followed by a post-congress tour. Nairobi, with over five million residents, is a lively and chaotic city. The streets are filled with cars, motorbikes, and the famous matatus, colourful, decorated minibuses that serve as shared public transport.

One highlight was visiting the Giraffe Centre, where feeding the giraffes was a fun and surprisingly gentle experience.

Encounters in Nairobi

Another stop was a guided tour through Kibera, the largest slum in Africa, home to more than half a million people in just 2.5 square kilometres.

This visit was bittersweet – on the one hand, it was eye-opening to see the challenges residents face, such as limited electricity, paid toilet facilities, and high unemployment rates.

On the other hand, the warmth of the people, especially the children, was unforgettable. Bringing food and small treats to share with them gave me a lot of joy and left me with lasting reflections on gratitude and perspective.

From City to Coast

Nairobi is also unique for being the only capital city in the world with a national park, where I joined a safari before flying to the coast. My next stop was Malindi, on the Indian Ocean – a tropical spot so idyllic that someone joked, “Welcome to Bali”.

The beaches were beautiful, though mosquito protection was always on my mind. Even so, the mix of city life, wildlife, and seaside relaxation made the trip complete. More safaris in Kenya are on my list for 2026, and I am looking forward to them.
