Halkidiki Getaway & Gyros

In September 2019, I visited Greece to spend time with a friend who was living there, exploring both Halkidiki and Thessaloniki. The Greeks are friendly and warm, similar to what I am used to in Croatian culture.

Halkidiki is known for its long sandy beaches, turquoise water, and relaxed atmosphere – the perfect place to unwind. I also tried one of the best gyros I have ever had.

Thessaloniki by Sea & Street

In Thessaloniki, I joined a boat sightseeing tour along the coast and explored the city on a hop-on hop-off bus. I also enjoyed walking along the coastal promenade, lined with cafés and offering great views of the Aegean Sea.

The city’s mix of ancient, Byzantine, and modern architecture reflects its long and layered history. Highlights included the Arch of Galerius, Aristotelous Square, and the White Tower, a 15th-century Ottoman fortification that later served as a prison for political prisoners during the Ottoman period.
