Discovering Argentina

As a pharmacy student, I had the opportunity to attend a congress in Mendoza, Argentina, in 2018. Getting there was already an adventure – the journey took about 40 hours one way, but it was absolutely worth it.

Mendoza, surrounded by the Andes Mountains, offers stunning natural scenery, vineyards, and a calm atmosphere that makes you forget how far you have travelled.

Between Mountains and Valleys

I visited the Andes, where the cool winter air in August made the snow-capped peaks particularly striking. I also explored Villavicencio, a mountain area with winding roads and mineral springs, which offered another perspective on Mendoza’s natural beauty.

As it was August, winter in Argentina, the cool air and bright sunshine gave everything a special charm – something Europeans often do not expect when thinking of South America.

Culture and Connection

During my stay, I tried mate, the traditional Argentine tea made from yerba mate leaves. It is shared among friends, passed from one person to the next, and refusing it is considered impolite – a simple yet meaningful local tradition.

I also enjoyed trying empanadas, an Argentinian speciality, which quickly became one of my favourite foods. Mendoza is famous for producing some of the world's finest wines, which was a delight to experience firsthand.

Argentinians also know how to celebrate – some of the best parties I have attended were in Mendoza.
